About the Event

This event honors Garry Buttermann IV and supports critical research.

Honoring Garry

This event honors the life of Garry Buttermann IV and contributes to the fight against Prion Disease in his memory. Prion diseases are very rare, affecting approximately 1 in 1,000,000 people each year.

The symptoms of Prion Disease mimic other neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s Disease. The progression of the disease is rapid and always fatal. Garry died at the age of 39, one week after he received his diagnosis.

Your participation as a golfer, sponsor, or donor helps keep Garry’s legacy alive and brings hope to families facing Prion Disease.

About the CJD Foundation

The CJD Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded to support families affected by Prion Diseases, raise awareness, and support medical education and research.

The CJD Foundation awards Family Memorial Research Grants to scientists devoted to prion disease research. In July 2017, Garry’s family had the honor to meet the recipient of the 2016 Garry G. Buttermann IV Family Memorial Research Grant and gain an understanding of how their grant was contributing to the fight against Prion Disease.

Proceeds from this scramble support these grants in Garry’s name.

Update from Dr. Mays

A medical perspective on Prion Disease and the impact of early intervention.

The Tortoise and the Hare

“So like the story of the tortoise and the hare, if you present an anti-prion early enough it may inhibit the pathogenic prion from replicating or slow it down. Therefore, the anti-prion wins.”

Research funded by Family Memorial Research Grants brings us closer to understanding how to slow or prevent these devastating diseases. Your support helps make this work possible.
